Keystone Pipeline System
Alberta
The Alberta portion of the project consists of 269 km (167 miles) of pipeline and five pump stations. The route starts in Flagstaff County extending though the M.D. of Provost, Special Areas and Cypress County in southern Alberta.
From there the pipeline will continue into Saskatchewan and cross the border through Montana, South Dakota and finally to Steele City, Nebraska. The Keystone XL Pipeline will complete the existing base Keystone Pipeline System.
The five pump stations are located in: Flagstaff County, the M.D. of Provost and Special Areas.
In 2009, TC Energy submitted its regulatory application for Keystone XL in Canada. It was approved by the Canada Energy Regulator (formerly National Energy Board) in 2010. Since then, we have obtained all required easements in Canada, and have continued to conduct important project activities, including updates to environmental studies and ongoing stakeholder and Indigenous engagement. In May 2019, the Canada Energy Regulator (CER) approved outstanding pre-construction conditions for the project in Canada.
Albertans will directly benefit from Keystone XL as it will create substantial economic activity during both construction and operations, putting thousands of Canadians to work. It will also create demand for things such as construction and maintenance equipment, food services, accommodation and more. We anticipate a peak workforce of more than 1,600 short-term jobs during construction across the right-of-way in Alberta. Once in-service, Keystone XL will also contribute an estimated $4.35 million in additional annual property taxes to municipalities along the pipeline right-of-way in Alberta. These dollars will support community services such as fire protection, policing, schools, hospital districts and waste management.
The Keystone XL Pipeline is a critical infrastructure project for the economic strength and energy infrastructure of North America. We are committed to continuing to engage communities along the Keystone XL right-of-way in Canada and will provide regular updates as we construct the project.

Keystone XL bottles up community support
Keystone XL Project field staff and prime contractors have raised more than $9,400 for organizations that are important to them and are continuing to raise money for various charities through bottle drives and other initiatives.
